College: Sports vs. Studies?

May 4th, 2009 by aachamber | Print

Over the weekend, I read a little blurb in the sports section about congressional hearings demanding change in the Bowl Championship Series format. It seems some Congressman believe we should have a playoff. This upsets me for two reasons.

First, I think college football has forgotten that these young men should be students first and athletes second. Studies do not mean class room activity only; it includes learning basic life and survival skills, making mistakes one can learn from and just plain growing up. College football, as much as I enjoy watching it, has become too intense at all levels.

Secondly, is this the most important issue Congress has to deal with at this time? With the incredibly fast pace of change, shouldn’t they be dealing with the economy, our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan and just about anything other than college football

  1. I agree Jesse — I can’t believe Congress has nothing better to do that deal with College Football playoffs. While I LOVE college football, It makes me sick that our US Government can’t find something better to spend time on. So sad.
